Special Education at Great Hearts
At Great Hearts Academies, we are committed to providing a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) to all students with disabilities who are currently eligible—or are determined to be eligible—for special education and related services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
A Classical Education for All
Access to a classical, liberal arts education is at the heart of Great Hearts’ philosophy. We believe that every child benefits when students with diverse needs are included in the general education environment. The unnecessary removal or separation of students with disabilities not only limits their experience but also diminishes the richness of the classroom for all.
Inclusive, Individualized Support
Our practice is to include students with disabilities in the general classroom to the maximum extent appropriate, while providing targeted support to build strategies and skills through specialized instruction.
Guided by our mission—to foster perseverance through courage and introspection—our Special Education teams design individualized programs that:
- Maximize access to the liberal arts curriculum
- Offer small-group or one-on-one instruction
- Provide services both inside and outside the classroom, during the regular school day
These programs address each student’s specific areas of need and may include related services such as:
- Speech and language therapy
- Occupational therapy
- Physical therapy
- School-based counseling
- Consultation with a teacher of the hearing impaired
