Academics

A Great Hearts education prepares students to be more than just proficient test takers, but rather, to become great-hearted leaders capable of success throughout their high educations and professional careers. We emphasize that in order for students to become great-hearted leaders they must share in a knowledge that is rooted in the classical liberal arts tradition.

While students will learn at different paces, we believe that true education is a matter of development over time and within a stable community. At Great Hearts we give our students individualized attention, but always within a common, one-track curriculum. Please explore our reading lists and curriculum sequences.

Spalding Phonograms (K-5)

Spalding Phonograms (K-5)

Spalding is used in the early grades as a foundational approach to literacy. Students practice phonograms, spelling, handwriting, reading, and sentence work in a structured, explicit way so they build strong habits from the beginning. This supports the broader classical curriculum because students are preparing to read carefully, write clearly, spell with confidence, and eventually engage with rich literature, history, poetry, philosophy, and primary texts.

Well-Ordered Language

Well-Ordered Language

Great Hearts uses Well-Ordered Language to help students understand grammar as a meaningful and ordered system, not merely a set of rules to memorize. Through careful sentence analysis, students learn how words function together, how ideas are formed clearly, and how language carries meaning with precision.
